The Three Pathways

Choose the residency that fits your life

St. Kitts and Nevis offers three distinct residency categories administered under the immigration laws of the Federation. All applications are considered on their individual merits and remain subject to the discretion of the relevant immigration authorities.

Pathway 1

Temporary Residency

EC $600 / year

For non-citizens who wish to reside in the Federation on a temporary basis, including retirees, expatriates, and those who own or rent property in the Federation. Does not confer the right to work or engage in any gainful occupation.

  • Open to retirees, expatriates, and lifestyle residents
  • Also available to spouses of work permit holders and spouses of annual or permanent residents
  • Must provide evidence of accommodation, financial support, and lawful immigration status
  • No right to work or engage in business without a separate valid work permit
  • Renewable annually — verify renewal period with the Immigration Department
  • Medical certificate required (current valid Mantoux skin test; chest X-ray if reading exceeds 10mm; RPR/VDRL within 6 months)
Pathway 2

Annual Residency

EC $1,500 / year

For persons who have lawfully resided and worked in the Federation for a substantial period, or who have a qualifying connection established through education in St. Kitts and Nevis. Annual Residency grants the right to work in any business.

  • Standard eligibility: held valid work permits for at least 3 consecutive years immediately preceding the application
  • Alternative eligibility: commenced education in St. Kitts and Nevis before age 14 and maintained a substantial connection with the Federation
  • Full right to work in any business sector — not tied to a single employer
  • Renewable annually — verify renewal period with the Immigration Department
  • Medical certificate required (Mantoux skin test; chest X-ray if reading exceeds 10mm; RPR/VDRL within 6 months)

For those establishing a substantial and enduring connection with the Federation. Two routes are available depending on age and residency history. Permits residence; full employment rights are not automatic.

  • Retiree route (age 62+): must own qualifying property valued at a minimum of US$350,000 for at least 7 years, and demonstrate financial self-sufficiency
  • Under-62 route: evidence of lawful residence in the Federation for at least 3 years required
  • Applications reviewed by the Immigration Department; may be referred for ministerial consideration
  • Seven years of qualifying property ownership opens the path to citizenship
  • NSR identifies and secures qualifying properties at the US$350,000 threshold and above
  • All documents must be original or notarised; certified translations required if not in English
  • Medical certificate required (Mantoux skin test; RPR/VDRL within 6 months)

All fees are government-set and subject to change. Always verify current requirements and fees with the Immigration Department or your appointed legal professional before submission.

From resident to citizen

Permanent Residency is not just a lifestyle choice — it is a long-term investment in your family's future. After seven years of continuous ownership of a qualifying property valued at a minimum of US$350,000, Permanent Residents may be eligible to apply for citizenship.

This is a distinct process from the Citizenship by Investment programme and involves its own requirements, including ministerial consideration. NSR can facilitate introductions to the appropriate professionals to guide you on this pathway.

Permanent Residency permits long-term residence but does not automatically carry employment rights. Citizenship, gained through the CBI programme, gives you a full St. Kitts and Nevis passport with visa-free access to 150+ countries and can be obtained in 4–6 months with no residency requirement. All applications are considered on their individual merits by the Immigration Department.

For the retiree route (age 62 and above), you must own qualifying property with a minimum value of US$350,000 and have owned it for at least seven years. You must also demonstrate the financial capacity to maintain yourself without recourse to public assistance. For applicants under the age of 62, evidence of lawful residence in the Federation for at least three years is typically required. NSR maintains a curated selection of qualifying properties and can identify options that match both the threshold and your lifestyle requirements.
